How to Verify Prize Notifications Safely

A prize notification is good news at first, but it is still worth a quick check. The most important first step is to ask whether you actually entered the sweepstakes mentioned. If the sponsor, the prize and the approximate entry period match what you remember, that is already a useful plausibility check.

Next, check the sender. For an email, the domain should match the sponsor or a clearly authorized service provider. For messages on social networks, look at whether it is really the official account. Similar-sounding usernames, extra characters or newly created profiles are used again and again for fake prize messages.

Be especially careful if you are suddenly asked for money before an ordinary prize is handed over. Fees for supposed unlocking, insurance or simply receiving the prize are a warning sign. Credit card details, online banking logins or passwords should also never be sent because of an unexpected prize message.

Some genuine sponsors need additional details to fulfill a prize, for example a shipping address or, for certain trips, information for the booking. What matters is that the request fits the specific prize and the contact channel is traceable. If in doubt, do not click the link in the message directly. Instead, open the sponsor's official website separately.

Deadlines matter too. The official rules may require winners to respond within a certain period. A plausible notification should therefore not simply be ignored. At the same time, no legitimate prize is a reason to skip security checks.

MITSPIEL for the United States publishes winner information only where it is verifiably available or has been released accordingly. The actual prize notification and delivery, however, are handled by the respective sponsor. Eligibility, such as age and state of residence, is set by each sponsor's official rules, and some sweepstakes are void in certain states. If you are unsure, use the sponsor's officially published contact options and ask directly.
