Entering Sweepstakes Safely in the United States

How to recognize legitimate sweepstakes and giveaways in the US, and which warning signs to watch for with unfamiliar promotions.

Entering Sweepstakes Safely in the United States

Anyone entering sweepstakes should first check who is behind the promotion. A legitimate sweepstakes clearly names the sponsor, leads to a verifiable official website and provides understandable official rules. Especially with promotions discovered through social networks or forwarded links, it pays to take a second look at the domain, the contact details and the sender.

For participants in the United States, it is also important whether the promotion is actually open to you. Most sweepstakes are open to legal residents of the 50 United States and D.C., but eligibility, including minimum age and state of residence, is set by each sponsor's official rules, and some sweepstakes are void in certain states. International giveaways sometimes exclude individual countries or limit shipping and prize fulfillment to certain regions. That is why eligibility should not be inferred from an ad alone. The sponsor's current official rules are what count.

Be cautious if an alleged prize is suddenly tied to an advance payment, a premium-rate phone number or the spontaneous entry of sensitive payment details. Time pressure, unusual domains, typos in the sender's address or a request to confirm a prize exclusively through a messaging app can also be warning signs. Legitimate sweepstakes state "no purchase necessary" in their official rules. If you are unsure, open the sponsor's known website yourself in your browser and look for the promotion or for official contact details there.

Regarding personal information: for many sweepstakes, a name and contact details are understandably necessary so that winners can be notified. If more information is requested, it should be clear what it is needed for. Newsletter or marketing consents should be recognizable as such and not be confused with the actual entry.

MITSPIEL prefers direct sponsor sources and separates unverified finds from publicly approved listings. Even so, the sponsor's information remains binding. Before you submit an entry, check the end date, the eligibility requirements and the official landing page once more.
